Fixings and hooks are needed to secure items to our walls and ceilings. Fixtures including shelves, wall cabinets, mirrors, pictures, lights and even chandeliers all need to be secured in a visually appealing manner, and most importantly they must be secure, robust and safe. Fixings refer to items that fix an item permanently to a wall (e.g. a bracket or shelf), whilst a hook allows the item to be lifted off (e.g. a mirror, hanging light, picture or coat!)

Choosing a fixing with the correct Safe Working Load (SWL) for a particular application is critical. The SWL dictates the weight that the particular fixing can support safely. The SWL has been calculated through extensive testing and will be much less than the failure load, this gives a degree of comfort (or factor of safety), for instance a coat hook with a SWL of 10kg is likely to support more than 20kg before failing.
